Discussion of the case
The British Pubs have been one of the top tourist attractions and a unique tradition in
the UK. Beer is the national drink of many people from the UK. These pubs or public
houses are known for offering food, drink and social entertainment to the public.
However, the recent statistics have shown a decline in the British Pub industry due to
changing nature of business and the pubs have had to adopt new strategies to comply
with these changes. The following graph shows a decline in the number of pubs in the
UK from 1980-2014:
The British pub industry is in decline and a quarter of its pubs have disappeared in the
last 30 plus years. There are a number of reasons to blame including:
● Changing Consumer Habits: One of the main reasons for the British pub industry
decline is the changing business environment and consumer habits. People are
spending more time in their homes and it has become more comfortable and part of
their social life. The home has become a social hub, instead of pubs. Over 50% of3
the beer sales are now through off-trade of supermarkets instead of pubs where the
price of the beer is significantly cheaper than pubs and it led many of pubs
especially wet-led pubs to close down.
