Part 1: Analyze the “Farewell to Baseball” Speech
Lou Gehrig made an immediate impact with the New York Yankees after setting records
that still hold today, when he signed after his sophomore year at University of Columbia, but
this all came with a significant price. Lou Gehrig presented his “Farewell to Baseball”
speech at the Yankee Stadium in New York City on July 4, 1939 after being diagnosed with
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis(ALS). During the speech, Lou Gehrig gave a fitting response
that eliminated the exigence in the situation.
During Lou Gehrig’s farewell, he makes references to his teammates, associates, and
family and the friends he made during his baseball career. In the beginning of the speech he
shows gratitude to have known these people during his career. Lou states that Joe McCarthy
is “the best manager in baseball today” and that Ed Barrow was “the builder of baseball’s
greatest empire” showing how lucky he was to have the opportunity to play baseball and to
also show the audience that he is thankful.
Lou Gehrig used spatial organization during his speech, which made it easy for him to
demonstrate different relationships throughout the speech. During the introduction of the
farewell, Lou opens the farewell by stating “Fans, for the past two weeks you have been
reading about a bad break I got. Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of
the earth” which opened his speech in a positive way despite it being a negative issue. Lou
