Grade Details - All Questions 1. Question: (TCO 1, 2) Identify and analyze two causes of World War I. Use historical examples to support your answer. Of the various causes of World War I, which d ... o you think was the most important, and why? Student Answer: Nationalism and Imperialism were two of the main causes of World War I. Nationalism being the most important cause, as extreme forms of patriotism, which primed the way to support the war. Nationalism gave the citizens too much confidence in their government and military strength, convinced many that their nation was being threatened creating a rivalry between Europe's powers. The was competition for natural resources, industries and military creating a need for more national security and required more territories and colonies for power and resources. On the other hand Imperialism had a significant role as well because of the dual anarchy of the Austrian Hungarian power. This dual anarchy brought ethnic groups and their kingdom under control of the German empire. Even though it recognized the self right of the Hungarians it proved to be an unsuccessful union. Europeans countries wanted more expansion and the Slavic people no longer wanted part of Austria's Hungary but instead of Serbia. The armies of both France and Germany military had a high population invested in them, causing colonial rivalry which led to a naval arms race between Britain and Germany. Germany wanted to increase it own colonial empire, and most of the good colonies were taken fueling the fire that was WW1. Long term feuds and disputes caused by imperialism and nationalism resulted in the "Triple Entente". England, France and Russia created a common alliance opposed to the Triple Alliance of Germany, Austria- Hungary and Italy. Instructor Explanation: See Brower, pp. 36–39.
