Essay Question
How was Hanoi a classic colonial dual city? What were the structural inequalities of the colonial
urban environment? Did the French, Vietnamese, and Chinese live within the same city, or were
they really in two different worlds?
There are many ways that Hanoi was a classical dual city, they had many ideas of
advancement, as the French set out to create a new design of Hanoi they were not looking to just
stamp their own vision on the Vietnamese. The impact that the French left on Hanoi was indeed
permanent and although they have very positive intentions not all of the impact was positive.
One of the impacts that the French left on Hanoi was that they added a bit of infrastructure this
added some delicacy to the city as well as diction, for example, In addition to the impressive
architecture, the french decorated Hanoi with a number of statues and monuments, celebrating
their conquest culture and values (page 20, Vann & Clarke). Hanoi also had a period of time
where it evolved very naturally, the city was very overpopulated and was going to continue to
become more packed and unhealthy to live. After looking at these facts we can see that Hanoi
already sounds a lot like a classical colonial dual city. We see Hanoi did not have high income
for the citizens and they believed this would help improve the economy. Since the Vietnamese
and the Chinese were the minority when crime would occur the french officials would lay the
blame on the Vietnamese (Page 61-62 Vann & Clarke), putting more social pressure and struggle
