Ethical stan ... dards and the Code of Ethics presented by the American Psychological Association (APA) are basic standards and principles which must be followed to ensure research is conducted in a fair, truthful, moral, and safe manner. The three principles from the APA’s (2010) guidelines which will be investigated in this essay are: 8.02 Informed Consent to Research, 8.4 Client/Patient, Student, and Subordinate Research Participants, and 8.6 Offering Inducements for Research Participation. Additionally, considering a proposed study on homeless youth, this essay will evaluate the above standards and how they would apply to this research and how they can protect the subjects of the study. The proposed study that will be used for this paper is on homeless youth and the benefit of nonprofit organizations. More specifically, such as the case with the nonprofit organization that is most familiar to this author, Rainbow Days. In this nonprofit, programs consist of group sessions for school-aged youth (4-16) where major messages are taught to students that include, prevention in drug, alcohol, and abuse prevention. However, during these sessions, parents are not included in the teaching. The research question would be is the program more beneficial when both student and parents attend sessions or as they exist with children only? When conducting a study, it is important for subjects to be informed of all aspects, both risks and benefits, of the experiment to make a conscious decision on whether or not to participate (Malec & Newman, 2013).
