Define and differentiate the three models of communication: linear, interactive and
transactional.
Linear:
o portrays communication as something that one person presents to
another, flows in one direction, has 7 elements.
Interactive:
o Recognizes communication as a two-way street, more in depth
process of communication.
o Adds feedback in as a factor, flows from the receiver back to the
sender.
o Example: sending a friend next to you a text message and you
sending one back.
Transactional:
o Recognizes communication as a continuous action, sender and
receiver are simultaneously sending and receiving messages.
o This model is dynamic, sender and receiver are always
changing/adapting their messages.
o Adds environment: includes physical location, personal
experiences, cultural backgrounds=ADDS CONTEXT
o Example: two people having dinner together in a restaurant.
Describe the seven elements of the linear model: source, encoding, message, channel,
decoding, receiver and noise. Provide an example for each.
Source: the speaker formulates an idea, constructs the message, then
successfully expresses the idea.
Encoding: the speaker translates his/her own thoughts/ideas into words,
taking an abstract idea and giving it meaning through symbols. Final outcome
= message.
Presented over a channel: in Face-to-Face communication this is the physical
space that the soundwaves travel through.
Delivered to the receiver.
Decoding: receiver must comprehend the symbols/language the speaker uses.
Noise: anything that alters the message after was sent (can be physical or
psychological).
