Section 1: Short Answer (60 points) In this section, you will write a response to each of the following items. Remember to use examples and be specific. A. Answer these questions about Chinese immigrants. (5 points) Why did most Chinese immigrants come to America? (1 point) -They came to America because of the California Gold Rush, and because they lacked opportunity in China. They felt that this was a good time to gain wealth, just as many Americans believed it was. What happened when the railroads were finished? (4 points) -The completion of the railroad allowed for easier travel for goods and people. This allowed families to relocate to new areas, and for wider trade opportunities. B. Answer the following questions about the Triangle Shirtwaist factory disaster. (5 points) What caused the disaster in the Triangle Shirtwaist factory? (3 points) What were the consequences of this event? (2 points) - Several dozen employees of Triangle Shirtwaist, all women and mostly young, died in a fire there, partly because the doors were locked (to prevent employees from leaving early). The result was legislation requiring various safety measures in factories. C. As America expanded westward, the American Indians posed a problem to government policymakers. Give a brief explanation of each of the following American Indian issues. (2 point each, 10 points total)  Battle of the Little Bighorn: The battle of Little Bighorn occurred in the 1800’s. It took place between the U.S. Cavalry and northern tribe Indians, including the Cheyenne and two other tribes.  Dawes Act: The American government tried to Americanize the Native American population by offering land and citizenship to those who would give up their tribal traditions and culture. The Act basically regarded this distribution of land to Native Americans in Oklahoma.  Indian schools: Native American children were sent to boarding schools where they would be taught the English language and learn to assimilate to the ways of the Americans (white men).  Reservations: The Native American Indians were given certain plots of land where they could live and hunt freely (reservations)  Sand Creek Massacre: D. Choose six of the following terms and give a brief definition for each. (2 point each, 12 points total) Choose from: assimilation, black codes, Freedmen's Bureau, Homestead Act, Pan-Africanists, Progressives, Social Darwinism, unrestricted submarine warfare, League of Nations 1.
