Sojourner response questions 1. Dillard’s thesis is implied. What is the thesis of this essay? Identify three ideas she uses to support the thesis. Answer: Sojourner by Annie Dillard’s thesis i... s that all living things including the planet are nothing but sojourner that float along purposeless only to survive. At first in this essay the author compares mangroves to humans and then compares both to the earth. The author starts out by humanizing the mangroves by saying they are dancers “they stir and move at the stroke of the feet, keeping time and measure.”(Dillard para.4) This quote shows that Dillard is giving humanized characters to the mangroves. The author then says the mangroves “ A society grows, interlocked in a tangle of dependencies.”(para 7) which relates to how humans thrive in organized groups and or societies. Dillard finally hints at the term sojourner by saying “And the mangrove island wanders on, afloat and adrift.”( para 8) This shows that even though mangroves are great at surviving in intense conditions they still have no purpose. Dillard then says we do not belong on this planet because it doesn't accommodate us but just like the mangroves we thrive in societies. Dillard then compares the earth to sojourner “The planet itself is a sojourner in airless space, a wet ball flung across nowhere.” (para 13) In conclusion everything seems to be connected, as humans and mangroves which are both sojourner live on a planet in space which is also a sojourner [Show More]
