Diabetes in general is a widely known condition as many people suffer from it around the
world. Diabetes mellitus type 1 affects one million people in just the United States half of these
people are diagnosed under the age of twenty years (Wood, D). Over the past decade this
condition has increased for kids older than five years (Wood, D). Since so many people have this
condition it is important to know all aspects of type one diabetes. In this paper it will cover the
information about this type of diabetes such as identification of the disease, the role nutrition
plays in the prevention of this disease, its etiology, progression, treatment, recommended diet,
type of nursing assessment and nursing interventions needed with regard to nutrition, outline of
what should be included in client education and lastly two strategies to help ensure the patient
will over come barriers to the recommended diet.
First diabetes mellitus type one is an autoimmune disease where the immune system is
activated to kill the cells of the pancreas, which produce the body’s supply of insulin (Duncan,
D). Insulin’s action in the body is to keep blood sugar levels at a normal range (Duncan, D).
Without insulin the blood sugar levels can drop severely low or raise extremely high causing
death (Duncan, D). Some people have genes that make them prone to getting diabetes type 1, and
certain foods and environmental factors will make the immune system attack the pancreas
leading to this condition (Wood, D). Also type 2 diabetes is when someone eats so unhealthy that
they ruin their own pancreas but could possibly get the pancreas to better, if not chronic type 2
diabetes can turn into type 1 diabetes from such unhealthy eating and not exercising (Wood, D).
The next topic is diabetes and it’s etiology. Diabetes as mentioned before can lead to
death, which means it is a life threatening condition to those who have it. This disease demands a
life long dependence of insulin to stop the possible life threatening effects once the person is
