*NURSING > QUESTIONS & ANSWERS > Case study 74-Testicular Cancer (All)
1. As stated in the summary above, multidrug chemotherapy is often used to treat patients with advanced testicular cancer and other types of cancer. Why is multidrug chemotherapy often more effectiv ... e than single drug chemotherapy in treating cancer. The rationale for multidrug chemotherapy is to use drugs that work by different mechanisms, thereby decreasing the likelihood that resistant cancer cells will develop. When drugs with different effects are combined, each drug can be used at its optimal dose, without intolerable side effects. By using this approach it potentially reduces drug resistance, while simultaneously providing therapeutic anti-cancer benefits, such as reducing tumor growth and metastatic potential, arresting mitotically active cells, and inducing apoptosis. Case study questions 1. Briefly describe the mechanism of action for the drug albuterol? Albuterol is metabolized within the GI tract and primarily excreted through the kidneys. The mechanism of action for albuterol is essentially relaxing the smooth muscles of the airways. It activates the beta2-adrenergic receptors in the lungs which begins a cascade of actions that result in bronchodilation. 2. Why have the primary care provider questioned the patient about specific clinical manifestations? To collect data and gather more information from the patient to assess the disease process. 3. Based on the information provided above, does the patient have any risk factors for testicular cancer? [Show More]
