Focus Points for First WebEx 1. What precautions does the nurse take when giving any type of Chemo medications Any person giving chemo drugs should be well protected. The drugs are dangerous and eas ... ily absorbed. Workers should wear PPE- eye protection, double glove or “chemo” gloves(double gloves) and gown. This is for up to 48 hours. Even with oral chemo drugs, the nurse should educate the patient and/or family to make sure they wear gloves when they take the medication. The nurse should use the proper PPE but, the extravasation is a serious complication and the nurses number one intervention for extravasation is prevention. Extravasation: drug leaks into surrounding tissues “infiltration”. Anything over 0.5 ml of drug = possible surgery needed. Intervention is to monitor blood return and access site. Vesicant: chemical or drug that can cause tissue damage on direct contact or extravasation. REQUIRES IMMEDIATE ATTENTION. Cold/warm can be used, a neutralizing solution is the antidote. 2. What is Superior vena cava syndrome and what are the symptoms associated with this syndrome Tumor growth causing pressure on the vena cava, leading to congestion of blood; common with lymphomas - a medical emergency. Radiation and stent can be placed to relieve temporarily. Early s/s: facial/periorbital edema, nosebleeds/epistaxis, peripheral edema and dyspnea Late s/s: erythema of upper body, dyspnea, cyanosis, hemorrhage, hypotension, and stridor indicates RAPID SVCS progression (more noticeable in a supine position). 3.
