NR504 Leadership and Nursing Practice: Role Development
Week 1: Leadership Theory: Application to Advanced Nursing Practice
Select one leadership theory or style that aligns with your personal philosophy and leadership stance. Explain the selected theory or style and discuss how it can be applied in your future MSN role.
Being an effective and influential leader in today’s vigorous healthcare domain requires intelligible communication skills, accountability, focus, enthusiasm, and strong emotional intelligence. To be an influential leader and engage staff and help them grow, a leader must possess the ability to comprehend intricate human interactions and maintain a sense of self- awareness and a view of the big picture in an ever-changing environment. Leadership is understood as the process of influencing and guiding individuals, a group or organization towards a distinct goal.
Most nurse leaders have a variety of leadership styles that they incorporate in their profession. Depending upon their position within an organization, the circumstances or state of affairs, it is vital that the advanced practice nurse be able to adopt the right style of leadership to respond to the array of issues presented in any given shift. For this lesson I was asked to select one leadership theory or style that aligns with my personal philosophy, although I feel I use a blended theory of transformational and servant leadership styles.
Transformational leadership looks a bit different, as it focuses on the needs of the team members to encourage motivation, personal growth, and achievement of outcomes (Northouse, 2016; Whitehead et al., 2017). Transformational leaders are often described as charismatic, enthusiastic, and visionary. This style of leadership is innovative and responds well to the needs of team members and clients, with the primary focus to empower others. Transformational leadership offers useful applications in nursing, as well as other disciplines. Servant leadership is very similar as it shares a focus on others in the sense that a servant leader invests in those around them, truly desiring to serve those with whom they interact (Allen, Moore & Hershey, 2016). Servant leaders demonstrate morally congruent behaviors, and desire to facilitate the growth of their team members (Whitehead et al., 2017). As the name of this approach suggests, the servant leader puts the needs of employees first while assisting them to develop and perform as highly as possible (Allen et al., 2012).
Application of transformational or servant leadership in my future Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) role as a Clinical Educator, is something that I had demonstrated to me during my nursing education and something that I felt was a vital concept that I needed to adopt into my professional role as a nurse. During my nursing school journey, I had one of the most amazing and one of the most horrific clinical instructors. One showed me how to encourage, inspire and
