Week 1: Leadership Theory: Application to Advanced Nursing Practice
Consider the leadership theories and styles that have been addressed during Week 1, as well as their value to advanced nursing practice. Reflect upon your current leadership roles within the profession and respond to the following.
• Select one leadership theory or style that aligns with your personal philosophy and leadership stance. Explain the selected theory or style, and discuss how it can be applied in your future MSN role.
• Discuss your current leadership roles (formal and informal), and describe the formal and informal leadership roles that you will have in your area of advanced nursing practice.
• In your future MSN role, what are the implications of your leadership for individuals, teams, organizations, and communities?
Include current, peer-reviewed scholarly support (outside of class resources) to validate your work.
Dr. McConnell and Class,
One leadership theory that aligns with my personal philosophy and leadership stance is the Situational Leadership Theory developed by Paul Hersey and Ken Blanchard (Oberleitner, 2014). This theory supports the concept that there isn’t one style of leadership that is better than all others. With this leadership model, the leader recognizes that they must adapt their leadership approach to the person or situation at hand. The Situation Leadership Theory characterizes leadership styles based on the levels of task behavior and relationship behavior the leader uses to influence their followers (Oberleitner, 2014). The level of task behavior is defined as the amount of direction the leader needs to provide the follower for a task to be accomplished. The level of relationship behavior is defined as the amount of emotional support the leader needs to provide the follower in order to influence the follower (Oberleitner, 2014).
This leadership style is effective because different personalities are more receptive to different styles of leadership. Leaders that effectively adapt to the individuals they are leading create an innovative and successful environment (Luizzi, 2017). I personally believe this style of leadership is essential to leading and managing in nursing because of the physical and emotional demands of the profession of nursing. From my experience, I have noticed that different people respond to different styles of leadership differently. This is because of the emotional aspect of the profession of nursing. In my opinion nurses and others in healthcare need to know that their managers and superiors care about them as individuals. With the Situational Leadership Theory, managers and leaders connect with their team members personally and develop a relationship that allows them the lead them in the direction they want.
