 Literature -A bulk of written works - The best that has been thought and said  Two Types of Literature 1. Prose 2. Poetry Poetry Prose - Latin word poeta, a poet. - Language used for ... its aesthetic and educative quality -written according to pattern -expressing a feeling or an idea using symbolic language -Latin word prosa which means straight forward - most typical form of language -can be informative or persuasive -ordinary form of speaking language without metrical structure  Elements of Poetry 1. Meaning- in order to express his/her feelings or idea 2. Figurative language - expressing something in different ways aside from its literal meaning. 3. Imagery- details that can trigger the readers senses. 4. Sound the Ryhthm-refers to the emphasis on certain word.A repetition of similar sound.  Elements of Prose  Essay 1. Theme or content - general thought or idea of the whole composition 2. Style - refers to the choice of words and sentences structures used to convey the message and hold attention to the reader. 3. Form and Structuresequence of topic and transition.  Fiction 1. Plot or story linesequence of events that build up the whole story. 2. Character 3. Setting 4. Theme - central thought 5. Language and style  Tradition and Forms of Philippine Poetry  Ethnic Tradition 1. Epic- relate to the adventures of a hero with supernatural powers. Usually chanted or sung. 2. Folk Song - express the idea ,thought of the community . 3. Proverbs- Consist statement that teach ideas on morality and traditions 4. Riddles- a question or statement initially phrased so as to require ingenuity in ascertaining its answer or meaning. 5. Short Poems- usually a four lines with 5-12 syllables per line.  Spanish Colonial Tradition -poetic tradition comprise religious and secular lyric poem and narrative poem. 1. Metrical RomanceFocuses in chivalric,folkloric,legendary and religious theme. 2. Pasyon - written in stanza with 5 lines, 8 syllables per American line,recounts the life of Jesus Christ.  American Colonial Tradition -Tradition involves the creation of poems using both traditional and modern forms.  Contemporary Tradition - Social realism ,which entails tackling socioeconomic and political issues.  Forms of Contemporary Prose in the Philippines  Folk Narrative 1.
