Finding wilderness Analysis

Document Content and Description Below

In chapter two of The Moth Snowstorm, McCarthy describes his “discovery” of wilderness—and the joy it brought him—while birdwatching by the River Dee. Your next paper asks you to be somethi... ng of an explorer yourself, as you write a thesis-driven essay that uses first-hand experience to engage with the primary themes of McCarthy’s book: 1) the relationship between humans and nature and 2) the relationship between nature and joy. Based on research done online or in the library, find the wildest place within a reasonable distance from your surroundings, go there and write about it. This is an exercise on observation, personal experience, and connection to nature. As such, I suggest that you take a distance from large groups of people or highly populated areas. Consider, for example, visiting a natural park in the Bay Area with only one companion. Take the time to observe your chosen place at least once, and spend at least an hour there. If possible, visit it twice with enough time to appreciate the environment. Describe your surroundings in great detail for a reader who has never been (and may never go) there. Before you start, assemble a list of questions for both the research and for your exploration. They might include: • What is nature? What is the wild/wilderness? Where does it exist? • How does nature bring us joy? Is there a better term to describe the feeling(s) nature inspires in us? What are the sources of these feelings? • In making the argument about joy, does McCarthy provide us with a convincing framework for changing (for the better) our relationship with nature? • What do the words “place,” “nature,” and “joy” mean to you after spending time in the wilderness? Finally, as you respond to McCarthy’s thesis about nature and joy, don’t forget to take into account the greater theme of this course: What constitutes a healthy society? A High Pass paper will take a strong and clear position on the topic in the form of a dynamic thesis statement, provide well-organized supporting evidence, unique illustrations and thoughtful analysis that includes details from your visit and properly cited examples from the readings (including The Ohlone Way and Kes), be formatted properly, and leave your reader with something to think about. In order to earn the confidence of the reader, you will need to question your own assumptions on the issue, maintain a balance of objective and subjective language and anticipate and respond to potential counterarguments. Your paper should be 3 pages, no more, no less, typed in MLA format, stapled and brought to our class on Thursday, July 5. [Show More]
