COURSE DESCRIPTION This course covers more advanced pathology, signs, symptoms, incidence, methods of diagnosis, treatment, and medical and surgical conditions. In this course students are covering ... disrupted respiratory, cardiovascular, vascular, endocrine, urinary, reproductive, neurologic, musculoskeletal and integumentary functions. METHOD OF DELIVERY VN 300 Medical Surgical Nursing is provided as a blended course. METHOD OF INSTRUCTION Lecture which includes but is not limited to powerpoint presentation, groups discussions, audio/video presentations, visible body animations, and clicker technology for remediation and testing. ESTIMATED TIME FOR OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL PREPARATION Students will be required to complete reading assignments, homework, and prepare for quizzes and exams outside of class hours. The minimum estimated time for Outside School Preparation Hours (OSPH) is five (5) hours for each credit hour of lecture/laboratory. 9.5 quarter credit hours that includes 47.5 OSPH CLOCK AND/OR QUARTER CREDIT HOURS AWARDED VN 300: Medical Surgical Nursing II Clock hours: 96; quarter credit hours: 9.5 VN 320 MS II: Internal Clinical Experience – Clock hours: 24; (Total clinical hours for Module III 278 hours; students will participate in 24 hours of internal clinical experiences in VN 320 MS II) COURSE OBJECTIVES 1. Apply the role of the medical/surgical nurse in relation to health promotion and illness to adults with alterations in endocrine, reproductive, respiratory, integumentary, hematologic, neurological, immunologic, cardiovascular, and urologic systems, as well as shock, cerebrovascular accidents, and spinal cord injuries. 2. Examine the importance of biopsychosocial, pathophysiological and pharmacological concepts in health care acknowledging the adaptive, preventative, restorative and health education measures to maintain optimal functioning for clients with the above system alterations. 3. Utilizing evidence-based practice, develop and implement appropriate plans of care and client/family teaching plans for clients with disease conditions of systems found in course objective number one (1). 4. Apply knowledge and recognize specific nursing assessment skills related to the disease conditions of systems found in course objective number one (1). 5. Relate the importance of evaluation and the role it plays in the improvement of quality client care. 6. Identify nursing diagnoses, goals, nursing interventions based on evidence-based practice, nursing outcomes and evaluation criteria appropriate for clients with system problems. 7. Discuss etiologies, risks, signs and symptoms, treatment modalities and diagnostics in relation to the system alterations found in medical/surgical clients.
