ESSENTIALS OF MATERNITY, NEWBORN AND WOMENS HEALTH NURSING Chapter 11: Maternal Adaptation during Pregnancy 1. Jessica and Mike are new clients at your obstetrics office. You are asking them about ... the reason for their visit. Jessica says she thinks she is pregnant because she missed a period. Mike tells you Jessica is always nauseated in the morning and eats all the time the rest of the day. They have not been using birth control and have wanted to have children since they got married last summer. Jessica says her clothes are feeling tighter and her breasts seem tender. Mike says he has noticed that Jessica has been frequently getting up to go to the bathroom at night. (Learning Objectives 2 and 4) A. What subjective symptoms have led Jessica and Mike to presume she is pregnant? What other conditions could be the cause of Jessica’s symptoms? How can a pregnancy be confirmed as probable? Diagnosed as positive? She is having high appetites and has missed her period. Also she is getting frequent feeling of answering her call of nature. For her pregnancy to be affirmed, she needs to experience a pregnancy test her pregnancy which involves an easy urine test. The test results for positive or negative where positive conclude she is pregnant B. 1.Subjective symptoms that made Jessica and Mike presume that they are pregnant are:- Missed period, nauseated in the morning, eats all day, her clothes getting tighter, tender breast, frequent urination. 2. Other conditions that could be the cause of these symptoms are STI/STD, FLU or PMS. 3. Pregnancy can be confirmed as probable by the midwife, these can be reliable but are not definite. These are body changes that they observed during their examination. Positive diagnoses of pregnancy are definite eg. Are FHR, fetal movement and fetal outline on ultrasound. C. Discuss the nutritional needs of Jessica and her baby. D. Nutritional need for Jessica and baby would be prenatal vitamins, folic acid, balance diet Avoid food with lead. She will need more of all the nutrients. These will include nuts meat , legume, protein, iron. [Show More]
