Welcome to the Lippincott Williams & Wilkins’ Comprehensive Dental Assisting Workbook!
This workbook is a learning resource that will help you to apply your knowledge of the information in the textbook and master the skills needed to become a successful dental assistant. To help
you get the most out of your studies, we have included a variety of exercises that will help reinforce the material you have learned, build your critical thinking skills, and prepare you for success
in your career as a dental assistant.
This workbook is divided into ten sections that coincide with the ten parts of the textbook.
Each section contains exercises and activities that will reinforce your skills and knowledge of the
dental assisting field. Each chapter includes the following:
• Opening Paragraph—Each chapter opens with a summary of the chapter to set the stage for
the activities that follow and refresh your thinking on the chapter’s topics.
• Learning Activities—The Learning Activities section of each chapter contains a series of up
to four types of exercises. These activities focus on “objective” answers—that is, there is a
single correct intended answer to each—allowing you to recall and reinforce the information
learned in the chapter. They are:
° Fill in the Blank
° Matching
° True or False
° Labeling
• Class Activities—This portion of each workbook chapter includes questions and activities
that involve “subjective,” or open-ended, questions. Question types include:
° Critical Thinking and Discussion Questions—A variety of different question types appear
in this section, and your instructor may ask you to write your responses or may use these
questions as the basis for an in-class discussion. Regardless of how you use these questions,
they require you to apply the information you have learned to various circumstances. Some
chapters also include Case Studies in this section.
° Activities—These exercises require you to become an active participant in your learning
and allow you to apply your recently acquired knowledge and skills to the dental assisting
profession. Activities will help you to retain new information, build confidence, and show
you how to gather information and learn from sources other than the textbook.
• Chapter Review—The review section of each chapter is comprised of multiple-choice questions consistent with the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) certification exam format.
• Competency Assessment Sheets—These are included for every procedure in the textbook.
Each form has a place for students to complete a self-evaluation, for partners to evaluate them,
and, finally, for the instructor’s evaluation.
This workbook is designed as a concise, understandable, and interactive resource that covers
the skills necessary to become successful in the dental assisting field. Answers to the Learning
Activities and Chapter Review questions are included with the Instructor Resources.
