CHEM 120 Unit 7: Nucleic Acid Structure and Flow of Genetic Information

Document Content and Description Below

In the news, we often hear examples of how DNA or the transfer of genetic information impacted someone’s life. Examples range from DNA fingerprinting to genetically engineered organisms to an indi... vidual with a genetic disease. In each of these scenarios, the structure of nucleic acids and the flow of genetic information through mRNA to protein are involved. Describe an example of the how the structure of DNA or the transfer of genetic information impacted someone’s life. 1ST POST: “YOU ARE THE FATHER!” A DNA paternity test compares a child's DNA pattern to determine if it is a match. It can be done in an accredited lab or in the comfort of your own home. When performed in an experienced, accredited laboratory, its 99.99% accuracy guaranteed and can in turn be used as a legal document. Use of the DNA has impacted so many people's lives. For example, helping find out the paternity of the child in case of family denial by the father. One can prove to the child's biological parents using DNA testing helping many neglected children get parental support. 2ND POST: That is an astonishing article. Honestly, it sounds like a miracle for that man. HIV although is a controversy topic for health care providers. So many have come forward stating that there is a way to cure these effected patients, but sadly it is not being utilized. It sad that we can provide healing for millions of people effected but as pharmaceuticals and health organizations are more interest in treated the disease rather than eradicating it and healing the patients suffering and dying from it. I found another article stating that HIV cure possible after disease becomes undetectable in blood of British man. They stated that, “The 44-year-old is one of 50 people currently trialing a treatment which targets the disease even in its dormant state.” HIV is so difficult to treat because it targets the immune system, splicing itself into the DNA of T-cells so that they not only ignore the disease, but turn into viral factories which reproduce the virus. They go further along exampling that “current treatments, called anti-retroviral therapies (Art), target that process but they cannot spot dormant infected T-cells.” I am eager to see what new developments in the next decades for treatment and healing of this vicious disease that has caused so much illness and pain to the entire world [Show More]
