Essentials of Pathophysiology Diabetes case Study Diabetes Case Study In this case study, a 21-year old female (A.M.) arrived at the urgent care clinic with symptoms of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, ... and a fever for 3 days. She stated that she has Type I diabetes. She stated that since she has been unable to eat or drink, she hasn’t taken any insulin as directed. Observation of the patient shows she is unsteady on her feet, her skin is warm and flushed, she is drowsy, she is breathing rapidly and her breath has a fruity odor to it. She also had a hard time answering questions and, she keeps asking for water. The patient's blood pressure is 88/46 mmHg which shows she has hypotension or low blood pressure. The patient's heart rate is 132 bpm which shoes she has tachycardia (fast heartbeat), her temperature is 101.3 ° F which suggests that she may have some sort of infection, her glucose is 657 mg/dl which, is very high. The patient's potassium is 6.2 mEq/L. Normal potassium should be between 3.6 and 5.2 mEq/L. The patient has hyperkalemia. According to Mayo Clinic, potassium levels over 6 mEq/L can be life-threatening. High levels of potassium can cause an irregular heartbeat such as your heart beating too fast, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, chest pain, nausea, and vomiting (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2020).
