Document Content and Description Below

Aim: In this course, we explore how race, social class, gender, sexuality, and disability influence the production, content, audience, and social world for television, music, film, magazines, books, a... nd the Internet. Having this question as a framework, in their final project, students will pick a topic of their interest, conduct a short literature review and collect data through interviews or content analysis. They will present their findings in a written report and class presentation. Students can work individually or in a team of 2-3 students. At Oncourse, under the forum link, please submit your project title and name of the contributors by November 19th for approval. Some examples for research topics: • How has advertisement content of a single commercial product has changed over years [such as Coke ads https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0fxR2rzZzA] Methods: Content analysis of Coke advertisements in a given period of time [last two decades or so] Alternatively, you can explore how a single product is marketed differently across several countries to match the demographics and needs of audience. • How a commercial product is marketed to different consumers based on gender, race, disability, and so on [shampoo, razors, soaps, and so on, for different genders] • How college students respond to lyrics of a rap singer you deemed to be progressive? [methods: interviewing students after having them read the lyrics you chose, or watched the music video, preparing a short video that compiles students’ responses] • How do college students feel about representations of their racial/ethnic group in music movies? [methods: interviewing 20 students from diverse racial/ethnic backgrounds and creating a short video] • How inclusive a children’s program [say, Sesame Street]? [Methods: Content analysis of diversity of the identities that are included in the program] • How is social chance possible in a specific popular culture platform? You can choose a show, program, a company that stands as a good example/model for challenging the stereotypical representations of social groups. Examples: Children’s book that are gender-inclusive such as “I am Jazz” and “My Princess Boy.” [Show More]
