Unit 7 discusses the concept of "Japaneseness", specifically related to the film Spirited Away. I'd recommend that you view "Spirited Away" to help you understand the reading. For the paper, choose on... e other Miyazaki film (we have two on our site, "Nausicaa and the Valley of the Wind" and "Princess Mononoke". OR you can choose a different Miyazaki film if you have access to one). How does the film you chose reflect Miyazaki's view of "Japaneseness"? How does this concept of "Japaneseness" relate to the definitions of what it means to be Japanese we discussed previously in the semester? 2. From Unit 8.1, Consider the concept of "cute" in Japan (related to pop culture) and compare it to pop culture in America. What defines and motivates the focus on "cute" in Japan? How would/does that work in American pop culture? What causes the similarities/differences? For this question, I really want you to show your understanding of the concepts related to "cute" in Japanese pop culture and be able to apply/explore them with a different focus (America).
