Student’s Name Professor’s Name Course Title Date TEACHING VOCABULARY IN SLA There are different strategies for teaching vocabulary that work. The strategies that work for students include; ... The teacher putting themselves in the shoes of student. The teacher should be able to see the students from their perspective. They should make themselves feel as though they are learning the new vocabulary at the moment and this will help them create a good learning environment for the students to learn. Making direct vocabulary instruction fun and engaging-the teacher should introduce fun learning activities where the students can be able to learn the new vocabulary and understand the meaning of the vocabulary. This can be affected through the use of illustrations and descriptions as this will help the student to physically interact with other students making then have a good understanding of the vocabulary been taught. Through indirect vocabulary, students are able to learn vocabulary from hearing and seeing words repeatedly in different contexts. For example, through exposure to vocabulary that is learned in an independent reading book or heard in conversation, whether that be in person, in a movie, or online will help a student develop vocabulary that will help them understand where and how they can use the vocabulary. Reading aloud to students, especially those with disabilities, can indirectly instruct vocabulary as well and this in mastering of words and how to use them. The strategies that do not work for teaching students is not accepting that different students take different times to learn. Some students will grasp on material quickly but other will take time understand concepts. Teachers should give students time to learn and understand their vocabulary. Therefore, should understand the concepts they are teaching and they should encourage their students to use the learned vocabulary. [Show More]
