Week 1: Role of Research and the Importance of the Searchable Clinical Question (graded) Research is a fundamental role that every nurses plays but in different ways. How do you fulfill the researc... h role now? What trends have created a push for nursing practice based on evidence? As you contemplate your role in the research process, read the assigned Week 1 Case Study and formulate one searchable, clinical question in the PICO (T) format. There are several potential questions that could be asked. Identify if the focus of your question is assessment, etiology, treatment, or prognosis. Remember to integrate references. Right now my role in nursing research is completed through education and learning about nursing research and its role in nursing. As a nurse in the field working my role as a nurse in regards to research, is monitoring the changes in patients, the trends I see, trying things to see if something works better one way than another. As our lesson noted, “Others share research knowledge with colleagues and participate in research-related activities or research projects, while yet another group acts as principle investigators to produce research and publish the findings” (Chamberlain College of Nursing, 2016). I participate in research in such a capacity at my work. In my practice the nurses are part of a POD, made up of 4 nurses and one Doctor. Over the last year I have been part of a group of nurses who represented each POD in a smaller group of “nurse champions.” We met and discussed policies and procedures we tried within our own PODs that may be beneficial to other PODs. We discussed things that worked for us, and things that did not. Different PODs tried changing certain things and reported to the larger group if it worked, and then it became company-wide policy throughout all the PODs. I think I represent the notion that, “To fully implement evidence-based practice (EBP), nurses need to have both a spirit of inquiry and a culture that supports it” (Stillwell et al., 2010). I believe that trends of increasing formal education and training and varying levels of nurses, has made a push for nursing practice based upon evidence. Questions that I formed from the Case study are: 1. Could better discharge planning result in fewer readmissions? P: patient’s being discharged I: discharge planning quality C: poor discharge instructions and planning before discharge O: fewer readmissions T: n/a 2. Does adding prednisone to a well-controlled diabetic’s medication regimen increase blood sugar? P = diabetic patients I = prescribed prednisone C = no steroid use O = increased blood sugar [Show More]
