There are four classifications of diabetes mellitus namely type 1 DM known as insulin dependent, type 2 DM known as non-insulin dependent DM, gestational DM, and other diabetes secondary to other conditions. The body systems are affected by the insulin and contribute chronic hyperinsulinemia to the pathogenesis which worsens the high blood pressure, dyslipidemia, and coronary heart disease. According to Arcangelo & Peterson, 2013, hypertension, high plasma triglyceride levels, and low high density lipoprotein (HDL) plasma levels correlate with hyperinsulinemia secondary to insulin resistance and a worsened cardiovascular risk profile.
