W. E. B. Dubois (1868-1963) First African American to earn a Ph. D. from Harvard. He argued that giving African Americans only one educational direction and the white people several undermined the ach... ievement of civil and political equality. Dubois stated that Washington was depriving the African American education of their education they needed to become the leaders of their race. Booker T. Washington (1895-1915) He was the most influential African American in the United States. John Dewey (1896) established his own laboratory school at the University of Chicago. He was in favor of a child-centered curriculum. In which learning came through experience not through rote-memorization of facts and figures. He felt that they should be “learning by doing”. Ella Flagg Young (1845-1917) She served as the first woman superintendent of a large city school system (Chicago-1907-1915). She believed teaching methods should give the fullest expression to the interest of the child. She rejected attempts to mechanize the work of the teacher. She gave teachers a voice in decision-making. She worked to raise their salaries and increase their professionalism.
