Employment Discrimination: Gender/Sex

Document Content and Description Below

The requirements for the writing assignment are the following: 1. You must focus on a specific substantive U.S. business law topic that is covered in the syllabus for this class this semester by su ... mmarizing the facts discussed in a minimum of eight (8) recent articles (in addition to using the class text as a source for definitions of the law). 2. All articles chosen as sources for your writing assignment must be published by a major respectable business or general media periodical or newspaper, for example:  The Wall Street Journal  The Financial Times,  The Economist  Investors Daily  Bloomberg Businessweek  Fortune  Forbes  The New York Times  The Washington Post  major wire services and syndicated articles (e.g., Associated Press, Bloomberg, McClatchy, Reuters) 3. Your writing assignment must be written using at least eight (8) appropriate articles including the “springboard” article (in addition to using the class text as a source for definitions of the law). The “springboard” article must have been published no earlier than July 1, 2014. The other articles you find in your research do not necessarily need to be as recent. However, to avoid using sources for your topic that may be outdated, do not use any other sources with publication dates earlier than July 1, 2012. 4. Springboard article: The “springboard” article: (a) is the first of a minimum of eight (8) articles required as sources for the paper; (b) has been published recently (no earlier than July 1, 2014); (c) will be the first article you summarize when writing your paper; and (d) the only article that you must show the instructor in conjunction with receiving approval for your topic. Otherwise, there is nothing special about the “springboard” article. The goal is to use the article chosen and approved as a “springboard” as an example for further research on the topic, finding additional articles that discuss the facts of individual actual claims or cases, all of which should be discussed in the paper. By approving your “springboard” article along with your topic, the hope is that you will then be more focused on the kind of articles you need to find in your research on your topic. As noted above, unlike your other articles, which may be dated as early as July 1, 2012, the “springboard” article must be dated no earlier than July 1, 2014. You must attach a copy of the “springboard” article to the back of the printed copy of your paper that you submit and it will be the first article that you summarize in your paper. However, in all other respects, the “springboard” article is not any different than the other articles you need to find for discussion in your writing assignment. 5. Each of the articles you choose must discuss facts from a separate, specific claim or case on an approved substantive U.S. business law topic that is covered in this course during the semester. Each article must discuss a claim or case that is unrelated to the claims and cases discussed in any other articles you use. You must only choose articles that explain the facts that support a plaintiff’s lawsuit against a defendant. You will then summarize these facts when drafting your writing assignment. Therefore, the “springboard” article and the other articles you find may be discussing any of these situations, which are all appropriate: a. Claims and cases that have been brought to a trial court recently; b. Claims and cases that were brought to a trial court many years ago but are still in progress in the trial or appellate courts; or c. Cases that have recently been decided by either the trial court or appellate court. Please note: You may find an article dated during the last three years that discusses a claim or case that was later resolved or reversed. Therefore, you should be certain you conduct further research when relying on an older article as a source for a claim or case to be certain you have found the most recent articles discussing such claim or case. Also, the focus is on articles on U.S. law about your chosen topic. Therefore, do not include any articles discussing claims or cases based on laws of other countries. 6. Although there is a minimum of eight (8) articles required as sources to be summarized in your writing assignment, students are advised to find 10 to 12 articles when doing their research to be certain they have an adequate amount of research material to discuss. 7. This writing assignment is not a review of the springboard article or a discussion of the particular company or case that is discussed in the springboard article you have chosen. On the contrary, the “springboard” article is only one of the minimum of eight (8) articles you need to find for this assignment. The “springboard” article should merely be summarized at the beginning of the paper in conjunction with your summary of the law (using the textbook as a source). You should then move on to write the balance of your paper summarizing the facts from other articles that you found in your research that discuss other companies that are plaintiffs or defendants in other specific cases and claims relevant to the same topic. 8. You may make some references to the classroom text or any similar business law textbook for definitions – but such references should be few and you must not use the course textbook or any other textbook as a source for claims or cases discussed in your paper. Therefore, any cases that are discussed in the textbook should not be referenced in your paper. 9. Depending on your topic, your research will likely lead you to a mix of articles (and, in some instances, books) that discuss constitutional law, case law, statutes and administrative law that are relevant to your topic. However, your paper must be built around articles that discuss actual claims or cases; therefore, please limit your discussion of descriptions of relevant constitutional, statutory or administrative law to a short secti [Show More]
