Game Theory > EXAM > Upsides of Name, Image, and Likeness Policy to NCAA Athletes (All)
The Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) policy, also referred to as the right of publicity, allows students to be compensated for their identity when used for commercial purposes. National Collegiate Athl ... etic Association (NCAA) restricted student-athletes from being compensated for work because paying them would distract the students from schoolwork and disconnect them from their fellow non-participants in college. NCAA also considered college athletes as amateurs to receive compensation for their participation. In September 2019, Governor Gavin Newsom of California signed a Fair Pay for Play Act to allow college students to profit from their name, image, and likeness. The NCAA Board of Governors voted the bill to allow the students participating in athletics to benefit from their publicity. Among the benefits of NIL legislation to NCAA student-athletes is that it allows NCAA students to use social media to earn revenue from their NIL rights. The ongoing litigation of NIL rights confirms the no employment status, suffering of the student-athletes, and steps to improve their lives. [Show More]
