THE PERSON AND THE SITUATION ● When bad things happen we look for bad people to blame however (bad apples)we fail to question the larger system= where situations are intentionally created to syst ... ematically promote certain behaviours= which make it easier to fall in an us vs them way of thinking. Thus zimbardo beleives that situational factors can influence behaviour (bad barrels not bad apples theory) ● Situational analysis = not full enough for undestanding as humans have free will ● Kurt lewin - social psychologist : B=f(P, E)= behaviour is a function of the person and the environment . This challages fruedian theories which beleive that behaviour is guided by the unconcious forces. Instead social psycchologists emphasize th e role of individuals in choosing how to interpret a sistuation and how to respond. They also focus on the persons experience at the time. Similar to theories of physics= behaviour can be . theory used for businesses MIMICRY AND SOCIAL NORMS ● Mimicry: taking on for ourselves the behaviours, emotional displays and facial expressions of others, not aware that we are doing so. ● Chameleon effect: describes how people mimic others non conciously automatically copying others behaviours without realising it. Eg you make the same eotional expression as those around you, for eg if someone is smiling you smile too ● Subtly attuned mimicry at times serves as a social glue and helps coordinate behaviours in social settings by making people feel validated by each other= as they send each other unconciosly processed messages ● humans= social species= learning through observation = key life activity ● Social benefits of mimicry: can be seen by how they affect social interactions= people mimic others when they want to make a good impression.
