Prerequisites: Completion of or concurrent enrollment in STA 1053, MAT 1023, MAT 1033, MAT
1073, or higher.
Course Description: This is an introduction to the science of biology. Topics include biochemistry,
cell structure and function, photosynthesis, metabolic respiration, Mendelian genetics and molecular
genetics.
Attendance: Attendance at all classes is strongly advised. Your attendance will be recorded by
your i-Clicker responses. This course moves quickly, covers a large amount of material and
continually builds on previous concepts. All exams will be based on material covered in lecture. Any
changes to the schedule will be announced in class. It is also recommended that students
prepare for lecture by reading the assigned chapters in advance.

Exams: There will be four midterm examinations and one final examination. Each student will need to
purchase 5 ParSCORE Test Forms X-101864 (50 questions on each side). Exams must be taken on
scheduled dates. There are no make-up examinations. If an exam is missed for any reason, 40%
of the final exam score will be used to generate a score for the missed exam. Making up a missed
score with the final can only occur once during the semester; you can only miss one exam, a second
missed exam will result in a zero score for the exam that is missed. You are strongly encouraged to
take all tests and exams during the course. All students must take the final exam to pass the
course.
