The nervous system monitors all functions of the body. It receives information from inside and outside the body and then sends signals to the appropriate organs in the body in direct response to this information. The central nervous system has two main organs: the brain and the spinal cord. The peripheral nervous system has sensory nerve cells that send information to the central nervous system from external stimuli or internal organs, and motor nervous system cells that carry information to organs, muscles and glands from the central nervous system. The nervous system can be divided into the somatic nervous system and autonomic nervous system. • The somatic nervous system is referred to as the voluntary nervous system because many of its actions are under conscious control – it includes sensory neurons, which transmit impulses to the muscles. • The autonomic nervous system controls involuntary responses, for example, contraction in the heart, digestion, heart rate, breathing, salivation, and bladder.
