Ask them to rate their pain on a 0 to 10 pain scale. Ask the frequency of the pain. What alleviates the pain? What aggravates the pain? Is it sharp or dull? Is it continuous or intermittent? Does it radiate? I would do a respiratory assessment. Assess sputum color and quantity. Assess ability to cough to clear airway. Assess for airway obstruction such as dyspnea and wheezing. Assess for rapid and shallow breathing for pleuritic chest pain. Assess use of accessory muscles, flared nares, and stridor. Assess for tenderness or masses when palpating chest wall.
