Freud’s super ego, ego, id
•ID: Primitive, pleasure principle – impulsive and may be irrational (no ID example; rather go out dancing than study)
•EGO: Reality principle – rational self, experiences reality of the external world. Primary function of the
ego is the mediator to maintain harmony between the ID and the EGO (yes, I’m going to stay home and study)
•Super EGO: Perfection principle – conscious influenced by morals and ethics (very rigid with not flexible)
Imbalance where either there is a greater presence of ID or super EGO is considered mental illness as well as with the 3 layers.
