In chapter 3, Elizabet Keckley’s life under Mr. Burwell, in North Carolina ended. Mr. Burwell had died and Mrs. Burwell remarried to Mr. Garland, who lived in Virginia and then moved to St. Louise, where slavery was still practiced. After years of service to Mr. Garland, and even helping Mr. Garland and his large family (17 people) during his personal economic crisis by sewing dresses for white ladies, Elizabeth decided to buy her freedom as well as her son’s freedom (George). By then (1840s), Elizabeth had acquired a reputation of great seamstress among ladies of high societies, and knew that she could easily take care for herself and her son. What was her master Mr. Garland’s reaction at first & WHY, when she asked to buy her freedom? And finally, after a long time, how & why did he agree? Discuss in minimum of 250 words in your own words. Please avoid commenting using your own experiences in 21st century. Show your source using MLA style and exactly as (Keckley 31). NO MORE than 1 BRIEF Direct Quote (no more than 1 line only), points will be deducted for longer direct quotes. No source, NO points. 3 points B. Please read before discussing the topic/s: It took several years before Elizabeth Keckley was able to purchase her freedom, she had even planned to travel to New York to ask some members of abolitionist society to raise money for her. Finally in June of 1855, chance knocked on her door, when she had lost all hopes. What happened, according to Elizabeth, and what was her reaction at last? See paragraphs 2, 3, 4, & 5 on page 33. In your own words, minimum of 200 words, discuss the details. Please avoid commenting using your own experiences in 21st century. 2 points. Show your source using MLA style and only as (Keckley 33). NO MORE than 1 BRIEF Direct Quote (no more than 1 line only). No source, NO points. ===== Q4. Reading: Week 8 reading Behind the Scenes by Elizabeth Keckley, eBook 2011 edition. Access the eBook via Week 8. Once you have opened the book, go to Table of Contents (of the book), and click on Behind The Scenes; then select chapter IV; pages 38-39 A. In chapter IV, Elizabeth Keckley wrote how before the outbreak of the Civil War (1861-65), while living in Washington, she became a dressmaker to the wives of many senators in Washington and even representative of Southern states (whites only), who, despite her slave background, valued her service and treated her with respect even by the women of the high society in the South (Elizabeth was now a free black woman). Who were these women exactly, what was Elizabeth’s experience with Mrs. Davis and what did Mrs. Davis do for her exactly; reaction of her husband Mr. Davis and who was he exactly (see long paragraph on p. 39). Discuss in your own words (minimum of 150 words) the details with specific names, etc. Please avoid commenting using your own experiences in 21st century. 2.5 points. Show your source using MLA style and only as (Keckley 38) or (Keckley 39). NO MORE than 1 BRIEF Direct Quote (no more than 1 line only). No source, NO points. B. Pages 43-44 in Chapter V. While in Washington, Elizabeth Keckley also met Mrs. Gen. McCLean, daughter of General Sumner, a Union Army Officer. Mrs. McClean became one of the most well-known patron of Elizabeth, and even in one occasion, in 1860, when Mrs. McClean needed a new dress for a special occasion, she made a promise to Elizabeth in return for making her a dress no later than that Sunday. What was Mrs. McClean’s promise and to whom did she introduce Elizabeth, and why did it turn out to be “the best that could have been offered” & what did Elizabeth have to do? Discuss them all in your own words, in minimum of 200 words. Please avoid commenting using your own experiences in 21st century. 2.5 points Show your source using MLA style and only as (Keckley 43) or (Keckley 44). NO MORE than 1 BRIEF Direct Quote (no more than 1 line only). No source, NO points. ========= Bonus points (1.5 points): Based on pp. 108-09 in Chap XIV, Elizabeth Keckley seemed to “take a slight retrospective glance” at her life as a slave for her owners Mr. & Mrs. Garland from whom she was eventually able to buy her own and her son’s freedom. Elizabeth eventually lost trace of the Garland family, but it appears that she never truly forgot about them and often talked about them to her friends in the North (in Washington), with sincere fondness. Her Northern friends would always roll up their eyes when Elizabeth would mention their names and express interest in knowing about the welfare of her ex-owners. In your own words (in minimum of 180 words), explain what do you believe contributed to Elizabeth’s kind attitude and thoughts towards her owners? Was it about the peculiar nature of relationship between masters and slaves? OR, was it mainly because she did not view herself as a victim of slavery, and instead as a black woman, who had transcended the barriers imposed by slavery and by a highly racialized society, and had established her own identity as a black woman? PLEASE DO NOT argue that it was because her owners were good to her (that is not what I am looking for in your answer). Keep in mind that her owner did not truly wish to free her. [Show More]
