There are 3 lines of defense. • First line of Defense: is n ... onspecific. Includes skin, mucous membranes, body secretions like saliva or tears that contain enzymes and/or chemicals that destroy potential pathogens. An example of a break in first line of defense is insertion of an indwelling bladder catheter, as it is a foreign body inserted into a sterile cavity. • Second line of Defense: is nonspecific. Includes processes of phagocytosis & inflammation. Includes: neutrophils, macrophages, and interleukins. • Third line of Defense: is a specific defense mechanism. Produces unique antibodies and/or lymphocytes (white blood cell) following exposure to a specific substance (such as a bacterium or a virus).
