Hi Professor and Class!
I chose to talk about the telehealth trend in healthcare because this is something that I have personally
seen used. Hebda and Czar states that “Telehealth is the use of telecommunications technologies and
electronic information to exchange healthcare information and to provide and support services such as
long-distance clinical healthcare to clients” (2012). Our reading this week states, “The reality is that
people with chronic disease or acute illnesses who live in a remote area, or who are near to care sites
but are economically or socially remote, can all receive home care, home monitoring and education for
self-management from a nurse using telehealth technologies and strategies” (Bartz, 2014). I live in a very
rural area and we only have 1 hospital every 40-50 miles. Therefore, we must utilize telehealth nursing
many times. At our local hospital, it is very small. We do not have specialists and certainly do not have
access to high end electronics. Of course, we have a cardiologist, pulmonologist and surgeon, but that’s
pretty much it. We have a telehealth device that we call Elvis, not sure why we did though, that allowed
us to communicate visually and verbally with the Medical University of South Carolina, MUSC. Elvis
allowed us to get in touch with a neurologist at MUSC and we could take the device into the patient’s
room and the physician could do an assessment with the patient without being there. This has been
great for small communities.
