ENG 105 Topic 6 DQ 1 Do some research to identify a trend, event, or a policy related to ADHD. If you look on news websites, you can identify and discuss what reporters are currently writing about ... ADHD. If you look at the policy statements by institutions such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (http://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/adhd/facts.html) or American Psychological Association (APA.org), you can identify and discuss which policies or advice they provide. You could also try finding events (either past events or future ones) about ADHD at the local, state, or national level and then explain what one or more events were (or will be) about. Then, summarize your findings and report them to the class by responding to this discussion question. During the week, go back and review your classmates’ posts and discuss similarities and differences between your response and your peers’ responses. After making some research on trend related to children with ADHD, I have noticed the need to have teachers well informed on symptoms and behaviors with children with ADHD. There has been a growing amount of diagnosis initially made by teachers that have referred the child to School Based Therapy to continue the diagnosis. With this happening very often, it is important that teachers and school staff members are well educated on ADHD, and how to cope with a child with such disorder at the same time maintain class room management. The way that a teacher interacts/reacts to the child with the disorder is very imperative when it come to a child with ADHD being successful in the academic world. Some teachers have a general idea of what ADHD but a through education is needed in order for them to have the tools need to initiate the diagnosis of ADH The research I found was conducted by the Center for Disease Control and the trend was on the prevalence of ADHD and the treatments. The findings concluded that over 6 million children were diagnosed with ADHD. Among children 2-17 years of age, 6 out of 10 were taking medication for their condition. Furthermore, the research found that just under half of those children were receiving behavioral therapy. Research also discovered that children from rural areas were likely to have an increase in diagnoses but less likely to receive behavioral therapy compared to children living in larger areas (National prevalence of ADHD and treatment, 2018) Children who do not have the advantages of a wide scope of health care options are limited in their resources and have no other choice than to take the medication. Often times the school system has some intervention strategies that can be of some assistance to the child, but these strategies are only useful at school. Parents are helpless when there are no other viable options. Hooray! You have made it through two essays, and you should be proud of yourselves. You have now written a rhetorical analysis and a review of a website. This last essay assignment will ask you to write a commentary of a website. What is a commentary? (Hint: look at the resources in the course materials and the e-text Ch. 10) What elements from the rhetorical analysis and the review essays can you utilize in writing a commentary? How are they similar? How are they different? Reply substantively to any or all questions and receive participation credit! What is a commentary! A commentary essay is an investigation of a trend, policy, or event. You want to collect information about the topic and establish a position on the topic. You will discuss causes, consequences and how society or a part of society is affected by this phenomenon. http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/685/05/ Review this video and the attached outline and chapter 10 in your text: Commentary https://youtu.be/n8NY6CyWEAo For participation credit, tell me in your own words, what is a commentary essay? Writing commentary means giving your opinion, interpretation, insight, analysis, explication, personal reaction, evaluation or reflection about a concrete detail in anessay. Writing commentary means giving your opinion, interpretation, insight, analysis, explication, personal reaction, evaluation or reflection about a concrete detail in an essay. You are "commenting on" a point you have made. Writing commentary is higher level thinking. It’s importance or the purpose of it in a essay is giving you the freedom on what your going to say or to write and give readers the a way to make sense of yourself on your essay they feel and can be hook about that. It allows you, to put in some of your opinion, analysis, and interpretation of facts. For this essay, , think about the examples you use to support your judgement/opinion of the trend. Be sure to you tell your audience of your findings and your stance? Be sure to discuss who is affected, why it is important, causes/consequences, and who is trying to solve the issue or what lasting impact does it have In a commentary essay, the writer can give their insight or reflection about a trend or current event. The policy I decided on is “Providing access to Mental Health Services for children in rural areas" The CDC policy gives a summary of evidence based practices or options for a public health issue. They also provide information on the history, status and significance of the issue as well as possible next steps. This policy explains the issue across the country that people with mental health issues including ADHD (certainly not limited to just that) struggle to get the care they need due to shortage of providers in their areas or even transportation is a barrier in the rural areas. Accessing mental health care is a major concern for rural residents as most doctors and facilities are located in cities. This is saddening news honestly. This website gives us policy options as they have found to be effective. One option for rural communities is Telemedicine. Telemedicine is defined as the use of medical information being exchanged from one site to another via electronic communications to improve a patient’s health status. This to me is more like a skype type communication with your doctor. I like that idea! Evidence in this website suggests that telemental health services can be effectively delivered to underserved populations, such as rural Americans. Telemental health can also effectively treat underserved children with specific conditions such as ADHD. I think this is an awesome resource for those whom cannot travel to their doctors. Hi LaDonna, I found something similar in my research as well, but mine had to do with how children from rural areas were not getting the services of behavioral therapy, sometimes those services are not available in smaller towns and unfortunately the children are only limited to taking the medication. I know that in my small town there is only one place that provides the service and it is hard to get in, fortunately our schools are staffed with a behavioral therapist. DQ 2 What are some of the causes or consequences related to the trend you identified earlier this week? (Or, if you posted something about a policy or event, what do you see as the causes or consequences of those?) Who (or what) do you think is responsible for the problem, or who (or what) deserves credit for solving some part of the problem? During the week, review your classmates’ posts and discuss similarities and differences between your response and your peers’ responses. The cause of children that live in rural areas that are not able to receive behavior therapy, are due to the lack of resources. The consequence for this may be that the child who does not have the advantage of therapy may be limited to taking just the medication for their ADHD symptoms. The responsibility lies within the community of the children who live in smaller towns. If the community acts as a body of advocacy, they may see the benefits of the child who succeeds because of the additional services they may provide.
