WEEK 1 JOURNAL 2
Critical Thinking
After reading the books and discussions this week, my definition of critical thinking has
more to do with the cognitive abilities. Critical thinking is the deeper thinking process or
analyzing the situation with the best of our own ability rather than using the outside resources or
help. However, the things we have learned already and the knowledge we have gained by
experience can be applied to critical thinking process. Writing this journal is an example of
critical thinking itself. I am using the knowledge I learned this week to write in my own words.
Heart of the Matter
Considering just what is in this weeks' readings, why do you think the authors (looking forward
in the text) see Chapters 12, 13, and 14 as the "heart of the matter"? What do you think they
mean by that?
Chapter 12, 13, and 14 are concentrated on the types of reasoning, comparative
reasoning, ideological reasoning, and empirical reasoning (Facione and Gittens, 2016). The
author sees these chapters as the heart of matter because these are the common ways of
reasoning that influence the grasp of the situation and conversation. These chapters also clarify
how people think and apply their knowledge in the given settings. As people advance towards
their goal, it is very significant to apply these reasoning to keep track if we are going toward the
right path. For example, I can ask question to my self like I am doing the right decision by
studying Nursing instead of Computer Science?, How will my decision of studying nursing
affect my family especially in times like this COVID-19 pandemic? Eventually, all
comparative, ideological and empirical reasoning will help us to take certain decision with a
thoughtful explanation.

WEEK 1 JOURNAL 3
The authors implied chapter 12, 13 and 14 as heart of matter which means these are the
underlying factors in the critical thinking process. Comparative, ideological, and empirical
reasoning speaks up our inner beliefs and ideas that we have carried and learned all along
through out our life. Thus, every single person has various style of thinking, and it might clash
with someone else’s reasoning. It also turns out that many of our personal doubts and much of
the discord in the world have more to do with how we think than what we think (Facione and
Gittens, 2016).
What two concepts do the authors say these chapters emphasize? How do you define these
concepts? Why do you think the authors find these concepts important to critical thinking?
The two concepts the authors emphasize in these chapters are inference and explanation
(Facione and Gittens, 2016, p. 35). Inference are something we conclude on based on our
knowledge, observation, and experience. The author’s do not give us the direct answer, and often
clues are provided to ask what they are inferring to. For example, I heard the sound of the
ambulance out in my neighborhood, I infer that someone must have been sick or had an
emergency. Explanation is the statement that is said to justify or clarify something. For example,
I am writing this journal to explain that I understand the concept of critical thinking. Inference
and explanation are key skills needed in the critical thinking process. With observation, clues and
experience, one can get a better explanation of a situation, and finally conclude to make a
judgement or decision on certain challenging situations.
Challenges & Insights
What do you see as your greatest challenge for this session in general? For this class in
particular? How do you think you can use the concepts in these first three chapters to help you
