A Person’s Most Powerful Tool: Communication Through Language
A person’s most powerful tool is their ability to communicate through language. People
depend on language to think and communicate properly, as we must build connections and have
healthy control in our daily lives. People’s languages give them the power to use their own words
and display their emotions, desires, and wishes with the world. Using language means they are
able to communicate, so others may understand them; and their messages are delivered and
received effectively. The power of language grows as their words are communicated and
understood to a more broad community. Words have the power to raise you up, destroy you,
inspire you, or anger you, but in all reality, most human ideas are delivered through words.
Language has and always will be an important measure of communication. Douglas
Rushkoff (2013) said, “But without grammar, we lose the agreed-upon standards about what
means what. We lose the ability to communicate when respondents are not actually in the same
room speaking to one another. Without grammar, we lose the precision required to be effective
and purposeful in writing.” (Rushkoff, 2013, para. 1) In our culture, grammar has been the
reference point we use to communicate through one another. Without proper grammar, through a
technological aspect, our messages tend to be unclear and misunderstood. In the workplace, for
example, our communication is primarily through email. Incorrect spelling, or failing to use
proper punctuation can create confusion with our coworkers. As we progress through our careers,
