There are many lessons and ideas that I have learned throughout the five weeks of HUM/115. Our reading material for this course, Critical Thinking in Everyday Life, has a lot of information teaching ... us how “critical thinking” can be used in our everyday lives. Three lessons that are meaningful to me are, replacing and modifying barriers that stop the critical thinking process, the 5-step problem-solving process, and determining the reliability and credibility of a message and the source. Ridel, (2015) discusses the importance identifying, replacing or modifying barriers that stop our critical thinking process. He defines barriers into two separate categories. One, external barriers: being family, friends, teachers and media. Two, internal barriers are our own emotions, rational, stubbornness, and biases (p. 27-45) (Ridel, 2015). It is important in my critical thinking process to be sure I recognize my barriers so that I do not become unreflective thinker (a sheep). By following and just believing information from my external barriers can hinder or stop my critical thinking process. It is important that I am also aware of my internal barriers. My emotional state could affect my rationale of decision making and instead making sound decision based on facts. I am aware that my emotions are barriers and to conduct a personal analysis of how I am feeling about a topic before I continue my critical thinking process. [Show More]
