MCKINLEY NR451-11033 JANUARY 2019 SESSION H.R. 64: PATIENTS FIRST ACT OF 2019 This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-NC-ND This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-NC-ND BILL SUMMARY • This bill was introduced with intentions on improving understanding and the possibility of enhancing treatments using stem cells. • The purpose of this bill is to promote research and conduct human clinical trials using stem cells to show and develop evidence of a considerable clinical advantage. • isolation, derivation, production, and testing would be the techniques anticipated to be developed using stem cells to improve the understanding and acquire therapies for diseases and other antagonistic health circumstances. • Seeking Some type of patient improvement from suffering illness or injury HOW H.R 64 MAY IMPACT PROFESSIONAL NURSING PRACTICE STANDARDS IF PASSED • Nurses who help deliver stem cell therapy will need a clear understanding of the standards of practice when treating with stem cells. • Nurses will need to attain what's known as dedicated competencies in cellular therapies in treatment to stay up to date with evidence based research. • Nurses have to be mindful of public policy on stem cell research that considers the ethical and health issues. • Nurses will need to maintain safe and clinically competent nursing practice. Knowing how to properly handle the stem cells HOW H.R 64 MAY IMPACT PROFESSIONAL NURSING PRACTICE STANDARDS IF NOT PASSED • Nursing standards won’t change we will continue as we are. H.R. 64: PATIENTS FIRST ACT OF 2019 IMPACT MY OWN NURSING PRACTICE • Many people would want it, however treatments may not be covered by private or public health insurance. • Stem cell use would impact my own practice tremendously (see next slide for disease and conditions stem cells treat) • I would have to enhance my standards of practice • I would have to educate my patients about stem cells • This could also put me out of a job because these stem cells could cure people • If effective this could change the world DISEASE AND CONDITIONS THAT STEM CELLS TREAT • Alzheimer's • Arthritis • Brain Damage • Cancer • Diabetes • Heart Disease • Lupus • Stroke • Spinal cord injuries • Liver Disease COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES • initiating policy proposals, changing or vetoing others’ proposals, and/or substantially influencing the implementation of health policy (Abrood 2017) • I would have to first step outside my box and be a advocate for nursing as a whole and speak with legislators and my peers regarding my concerns. • I can go to a local policy workshop and get more information on how to go forward with making changes. • Utilize the ANA foundation documents to get additional information on Legitimate power. HOW MIGHT THIS BILL IMPACT MY COMMUNITY • Give my community more education about stem cells and what they do • If this bill is passed maybe some members of my community can participate in human clinical trials • If these stem cells work my community could change for the better. Lots of people in my community don’t the money to pay for diabetic supplies so being a human clinical trial participate may help their diabetes. • On the other hand there may be lots of complex ethical and legal issues faced in the community HOW MIGHT THIS BILL IMPACT MY
