Complete an ATI Focused Review® and send a detailed summary (2-3 sentences
each) of 4 concepts that you learned from the focused review to me in the messaging
system.
- The adverse effects of Acyclovir include phlebitis and inflammation at the site of
infusion, nephrotoxicity, gingival hyperplasia.
- Monitoring for acetaminophen toxicity includes assessing for early
manifestations of liver damage such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, sweating, and
abdominal discomfort. This then progress to hepatic failure, coma, and death. The
antidote for acetaminophen is acetylcysteine.
- A potential complication for non-opioid analgesics is impaired kidney function
by decreasing urine output, weight gain from fluid retention, increased BUN and
creatinine levels. Use cautiously with older adults and clients who have heart
failure. Monitor I&Os and kidney function (BUN and Creatinine).
- Hyperglycemia and glycosuria are complications from prednisone therapy.
Patients who have diabetes should have their blood glucose monitored and they
may need an increase in insulin doses.
2. Complete the following questions and review the suggested learning activities.
Send me your answers here.
A nurse is caring for a client prescribed acetaminophen as needed for pain relief. The
nurse knows acetaminophen should not exceed 4 grams per day. The nurse will
monitor for early signs of toxicity. Name three (3) manifestations of toxicity.
Acetaminophen should not exceed 4g/day. S/Sx of early toxicity are GI upset, GI
bleed, and bone marrow depression.
Suggested Pharmacology Learning Activity: Pain Medications
A client is receiving IV paclitaxel for treatment of ovarian cancer. Which of the
following assessment data is a priority concern? Bleeding gums, unexplained
bruisingHair loss occurring 8 days after beginning treatmentIncrease in fatigueClient
complains of chest pain and shortness of breath
Shortness of breath and chest pain.
Suggested Pharmacology Learning Activity: Chemotherapy Agents
A nurse is caring for a client prescribed the chemotherapy agent topotecan
(Hycamtin). What are adverse effects of this medication and nursing
interventions/client education for this medication?
Common side effect include weakness, lethargy, headache, cough , n/v, diarrhea,
constipation, ABD pain, temporary hair loss and mouth sores. Can cause an allergic
reaction resulting in new worsening cough, trouble breathing, pain when urinating,
and low blood cell counts, bruising, bleeding, and lightheadedness.
Suggested Pharmacology Learning Activity: Chemotherapy Agents
A client is receiving metformin (Glucophage) for diabetes management. What are
three (3) potential adverse effects and associated nursing measures to address
adverse effects of this medication therapy
Monitor any GI effect and DC med if necessary. Administer metformin with meals to
minimize GI effects.
Metformin should be temporarily discontinued in patients requiring surgery
involving restricted intake of food and fluids. Resume metformin when oral intake
has resumed and renal function is normal.
Decreased vitamin B12 levels. Monitor and give supplements as needed.
A nurse is preparing a client for discharge. What information should the nurse
include regarding the client’s new medication acetazolamide?
Notify physician if allergic reaction occurs. Also report with GI effect and weight
loss. With DM pts closely monitor BG, obtain daily weights, teach importance of
obtaining lab tests, and how it can cause flu like symptoms. Teach patient how it can
cause fatigue and sleepiness.
Suggested Med-Surg Learning Activity: Disorders of the Eye
What should the nurse teach a client who has missed two doses of their oral
contraceptive?
The nurse should teach a pt who has missed two doses of their oral contraceptive to
follow the manufacturer’s instructions and to use an alternate form of contraception
or abstinence to prevent pregnancy until regular dosing is resumed.
Suggested Pharmacology Learning Activity: Women's Health

can occur with this medication? (Review the Pharmacology Review Module)
