Lesson Topic: Airport announ... cements and notces. Lesson Aims: By the end of the lesson, students will be better able to… understand what is going on in the airport, and listen out for key works in sentences to be able to make out what the topic involves. The general aim is to have the students develop the ability to listening for the main idea first, and then focus on the details and specific informaton of the audio. By the end, students will be able to practse listening for different informaton more comfortably. Lesson Outcomes: By the end of the lesson, students will have… listened for gist and specific informaton in the airport announcement and understand the context. The students will have also learned vocabulary words through the listening actvity. Anticipated difficulties: 1. Some students may find it difficult to understand the recording due to the many vocabulary words they may be unaware of and not being able to match the words to the definitons. 2. Listening actvites can be difficult, especially for those who have a hard tme keeping up. It can be disheartening for students that can’t fully keep their focus and understand each sentence. 3. Some students may focus too much tme on one word or sentence, Suggested solutions: 1. Play the video/audio as many tmes as needed for the students to complete their tasks. It’s important that I explain the words that they do not know or have other students to explain them. 2. I will ensure and support the students and remind them that these actvites slowly get easier the more we practse. Repeatng the audio and explaining any word they don’t know is key for them to feel more comfortable. 1 i-to-i LOVE TEFL Lesson Plan and completely miss out on the following audio. This tends to be a common issue when doing a listening actvity. 3. Vocabulary pre-teaching all the vocabulary words written on the board beforehand, or in their textbooks, will help the students keep up with the audio. Authentic Text (insert reading text here or link to the listening recording) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2InnDJagwT0 Please include a rationale for why you have chosen this authentic material (approximately 100 words): I decided to use an airport announcement for this lesson because according to “i-to-i tefl” (n.d.), these types of audio’s are great for those who are in the upper-intermediate level. It helps the students understand basic vocabulary that is necessary for travelling, as well as practsing listening when there may be background noise and words they are unaware of. It also symbolises phrases such as ‘Thanks a million’, which translates to thank you very much. It’s a great way for students to learn different ways of speaking too. This specific authentc material had essental vocabulary words, including the tme and short sentences/scenarios with airport staff, such as technical difficultes. It provides different examples from different airlines, and is very realistc. Overall, it’s a great way for the students to learn new vocabulary and understand how travelling may be in English speaking countries. I will tell them that it was a stressful travel experience of mine. I will then pair students and ask them to talk about a stressful experience of their own, relatng to airports and air-planes. For example: T: About 2 years ago, I was told that my flight was delayed by 2 hours, and so I took my tme getting to the airport. Suddenly, there was a lot of traffic. Etc… The students will then be able to understand the main topic of the lesson and get prepared for the audio clips and the overall topic of the listening lesson. Pre-teach essental vocabulary We will review and practce vocabulary words and explain the definitons before listening to the audio. 12 minutes T-S S-S I will write 8 vocabulary words on the board. Delay, boarding, announcement, due to, gate, departure, remaining, and landing. I will then ask students which words they do not know by a raise of hands. Then, I will draw a word map on the Pre-teaching essental vocabulary words before allowing them to listen to the recording will help them better understand the audio and not fall behind on the lesson. Otherwise, students will get stuck while fixatng on one word they don’t understand and miss the rest of the audio. Working in pairs will help boost confidence too. 3 i-to-i LOVE TEFL Lesson Plan board with all the meanings and explanatons.
