NR 535 Week 1 Discussion: Collaboration Café Think about your goal in nursing education (i.e., teaching in a pre-licensure program or an MSN program, or as a staff development specialist). The... n review either (1) the Board of Nursing requirements for nursing faculty in your state (for an academic program), OR (2) the facility requirements for a healthcare setting. Based on your goals and these requirements, what additional knowledge, skills, and abilities do you need to be eligible to meet your goal and how will you achieve these knowledge, skills, and abilities? Please post your answer and in the beginning identify the role you have chosen • Academic Nurse Educator • Nursing Professional Development Specialist Throughout my 20+ years in the nursing profession, I have always enjoyed helping colleagues and other health care professions grow in their current role or assist them to succeed in their professional goals of growth and development. I have always been one to welcome the challenge of precepting new nurses and throughout the years of doing this it has brought me much happiness and self-satisfaction. The joy it has given me so far has helped me set my goal in nursing education to become an Academic Nurse Educator and hope in the near future to teach in both classroom and clinical setting. Teaching in this environment does not always require a Doctoral degree (Oermann, DeGagne, & Phillips, 2018), but my personal long-term goal is to achieve my DNP. According the NJ Board of Nursing (2020), requirements for faculty in an accredited school are as followed: • Have a current RN NJ licensure • Documented education of course completion or experience in area of teaching. • For a baccalaureate programs, associate programs and diploma programs an MSN is required. • For an LPN program a BSN is required • Faculty must maintain competency in their theoretical and practice areas With knowing these requirements, successful completion of this MSN program is my first step. The next step would be working toward and obtaining national certification in nursing education. By obtaining certification in a nursing specialty it promotes excellence in that specific area and supports leadership. According to the National League for Nursing’s (NLN) Excellence in Nursing Education Model, academic leadership is one of the eight core elements needed to achieve excellence as a nurse educator (Patterson and Krause, 2015). Also, by obtaining and maintaining national certification it provides a pathway to maintain competency and stay abreast of current practice within the field by encouraging continuing education.
