Week 1 Discussion: Comprehensive Integrated Psychiatric Assessment In week one discussion, we are required to post answers to questions pertaining to the YMH Boston Vignette 4 video. In the video, th... e practitioner is doing an initial psychiatric evaluation to a new adolescent client. A comprehensive psychiatric evaluation/assessment is done by a PMHNP or a child psychiatrist for any child or adolescent with emotional and/or behavioral problems (American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, 2017). The evaluation usually includes present problems and symptoms, information about health, illness and treatment, parent and family health and psychiatric histories, information about the child's development, school and friends, family relationships, interview of the child or adolescent as well as interview of parents/guardians (American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, 2017). In what areas can the practitioner improve? The practitioner should have introduced himself in the beginning of the evaluation. He should also made it clear to the client what the psychiatric examination entails, how long it will take and what to expect at the end (Lempp, de Lang, Radeloff, Bachmann, 2012). Scheduling, confidentiality, and permission to contact other people to obtain information should also be discussed with the adolescent client right at the start. All these are part of building good therapeutic alliance with the client as most families and children/adolescents are intimidated by the prospect of seeing a clinician in a mental-health setting (Lempp, de Lang, Radeloff, & Bachmann, 2012).
