Week 1 Main Discussion Comprehensive Integrated Psychiatric Assessment

Document Content and Description Below

Week 1 Main Discussion Comprehensive Integrated Psychiatric Assessment Psychiatric assessment is done to obtain information to create a detailed history about the patient, and to disti... nguish problems to create a diagnosis along with a suitable care-plan. Assessment is essential to learn of the patient’s cognitive functioning; what they are thinking, their emotions, their values and beliefs, and changes in the patient’s life dynamics and lifestyle changes (Sadock et al., 2015). The video presentation shows a 16-year-old boy who has come for a mental health assessment. The provider did well in informing the patient about confidentiality. Confidentiality is a respected part of every medical and mental health appointment (American Psychological Association, 2017). Clients need to feel comfortable talking about private information; they need a safe place to talk about anything without fear of that information leaving the room. Conforming with this guideline may lead to a more rewarding clinical encounter and an enhanced relationship with the client (Murphy & Goldstein, 2017). The provider appears to be less emphatic of the patient and lacks understanding about the reason for the visit. Empathy is a basic component of all helpful relationships. Burks and Kobus (2012) notes that empathy is a vital component of high-quality health care and provide better information exchange between provider and client. Additionally, several studies have shown that empathy and related provider behaviors towards their clients are associated with multiple positive effects (Burks & Kobus, 2012). During the clinical interview, one area of concern is the providers lack of understanding of the patient’s developmental issue. The client stated that they thought he has anger issues and his mother keeps nagging him. Adolescents tend to identify and associate themselves with peers of same interests, and their desire to be autonomous creates conflicts with parental expectations (Sadock et al., 2015). Doing this interview, my next question to the client is how does he communicate with his mother? This question will let me gain insight on how to share and provide strategies of effective communication for the patient to sustain a healthier relationship with his mother. ……………………….CONTINUED………………………..
