Pre-Lab Questions
”1. What is the function of the endocrine system?”
The endocrine system consists of hormone-producing glands that regulate the body and
maintain homeostasis.
”2. Research two types of hormones and describe the mode of action for each. ”
Steroids aid in the transcription and translation of mRNA to act on ribosomes. Adrenaline
brings on the flight-or-fight response through the alpha-adrenergic receptors, epinephrine
decreases vasodilation, and increased vascular permeability.
”3. Which gland is both endocrine and exocrine? ”
Pancreas
”4. Which hormones control the fight or flight response? ”
Adrenaline
”5. What is type 1 diabetes and what is the treatment for this disease? ”
Type 1 diabetes is caused by the destruction of B cells in the pancreas, which decreases or
stops insulin production, causing hyperglycemia. This disease is treated by administration of
insulin subcutaneously or with the use of an insulin pump.
”6. Describe how Ca2+ levels in the blood are regulated by hormones. ”
Calcium 2+ levels are regulated by the parathyroid hormone, which stimulates osteoclasts,
which absorbs bone to release calcium into the bloodstream.
”7. How do the nervous and endocrine systems work together to maintain homeostasis of the
body? ”
The nervous system creates signals that go through the hypothalamus, which are then
transmitted to endocrine organs, which start or stop hormone production to maintain
homeostasis.

Image Type Image Observations
Thyroid Gland The gland is surrounded in a capsule and divided into lobes
Parathyroid Gland Capsule covers the gland
Post-Lab Questions
”1. Label the items in the following slide images based on your observations. ”
A- colloid
B- follicular cells
C- Thyroid Follicles
D- capillary permeation
Pancreas Thin capsule that covers gland divides into loves made of
acini. Islet of Langerhans cells woven throughout acini.
Adrenal Gland Capsule covers gland creating a septum for the cortex and
medulla.
Pituitary Gland Capsule covers gland divided anteriorly and posteriorly
Anterior Pituitary Gland Acidophiles, basophils and chromophobes.
