What are the 4 CLAS standards? - Answer- -language assistance and information to a client in their preferred language -ongoing improvement and accountability for culturally appropriate care -congruency between culture and health care -comprehensive cultural assessment What is cultural competence? - Answer- A skill the nurse develops in learning to respect individual dignity and preferences, as well as acknowledging cultural differences. Cultural Preservation - Answer- Assisting the client to maintain traditional values and practices. Cultural Accommodation - Answer- Supporting and facilitating the client's use of cultural practices that are beneficial to the client's health Cultural Repatterning - Answer- Assisting the client to modify cultural practices that are not beneficial to the clients health. Cultural Brokering - Answer- Advocating, mediating, negotiating, and intervening between the clients culture and health care culture on behalf of the client. 4 questions to ask when performing a cultural self-assessment? - Answer- 1. Am I aware of my culture and views about other cultures? 2. Am I able to perform a culturally sensitive assessment? 3. Do I have the knowledge necessary to develop culturally appropriate nursing interventions? 4. What is my goal in learning about diverse populations? Biomedical Beliefs - Answer- Focus on identifying a cause for every effect on the body, that the body functions like a machine. Focuses on identifying a biophysical cause and treatment for health problems. (US Medical Facilities) Naturalistic Beliefs - Answer- Relates the individual as part of nature or creation.
