Generation - “The Measure of a Man. -know who is DATA (the robot) -Know who is Piccard (the old guy) -know who is Maddox (the robotic engr.) -know who is Riker (the asst of Maddox/the researcher) 2. Ontology vs Metaphysics –kinds of Beings and Theories of Being -In the study of metaphysics, we investigate “beings” or “that which exists” –There are two kinds of being in the study of ontology (The study of being): MATERIAL BEING and IMMATERIAL BEING. -Material Being has 3 characteristics: 1. Spatial –it occupies space. 2. Public -it can be observed from a distance, or you can verify it. It can be located. 3. Mechanical – because it is assembled, it is governed by laws of physics (subject to the law of gravity), and it is non-intentional (not free to choose where they are). -Immaterial Being has also 3 characteristics: 1. Non-spatial – it does not occupy space (spiritual, abstract, ideas). 2. Private –it belongs to the mind as ideas, no one knows what one is thinking, unless one reveals it. 3. Teleological–meaning it is governed by purposes and goals. Human being is free and can decide for himself (intentional by virtue of reason and will), thus we are teleological in nature that is governed by our purposes. Even things have their own purposes and goals that determines their existence. However, it is not same as mechanical which is governed by physics. [Show More]
