Lois Fichner-Rathus states that Futurism is “An earlytwentieth-century style that portrayed modern machines and the dynamic character of modern life and science” (20-4). In this piece, the foreground and middle ground is an abstract aerial view of the city of Rome and the focal point of the piece is an outlined shaded face of Mussolini. The eyes are drawn to the visual weight of the skull or face because the shaded region is the darkest areas of the entire painting, with smaller areas of light and shadow to add depth, contrast and definition. The lines of the face and layout of Rome are structured and defined. Whereas the background of the painting is blended beautifully with added lines for definition and contrast of the clouds and rays of light. The piece has a strong visual representation of Mussolini over Rome because of the history that is linked between the two which will be discussed later on. The colors that the artist chose work harmoniously because of the color relationship between green, blue and yellow. Blue and yellow are primary colors, while yellow and green are complementary.
